IRVINGTON, NY (December 2011) — Chloraseptic®, the #1 pharmacist-recommended brand for sore throat relief, continues to innovate its trusted product line even after 55 years. Chloraseptic® has launched two new products, has teamed up with Daniel A. Hussar, Ph.D and releases the Chloraseptic Survey On Sore Throat Pain, all just in time for winter cold and flu season.
To the surprise of many, Chloraseptic® was developed by dentist, Dr. Robert Schattner, as an antiseptic and anesthetic for his dental patients. Over time, this over-the-counter (OTC) product has evolved so that it is now commonly recommended by doctors, pharmacists and other health care professionals for sore throat relief.
New Products:
The brand has evolved from a mouth rinse half a century ago, to include over 15 different varieties of sore throat relief products. The newest additions to the line include Warming Sore Throat Lozenges and Sore Throat Lollipops. Chloraseptic® Warming Sore Throat Lozenges are available in Green Tea and Honey Lemon flavors in 18 count boxes at SRP of $3.99. The new kid-friendly* Chloraseptic® Medicated Sore Throat Lollipops are the first of their kind and relieve sore throat pain with a variety of flavors including grape, strawberry and orange. They are available in 10 count boxes at SRP of $3.99. The new products join the complete Chloraseptic® line which includes easy-to-use OTC products including great-tasting lozenges, throat sprays and convenient pocket packs as well.
“The development of additional formulation choices has resulted in pharmacists recommending and consumers valuing Chloraseptic more than ever,” says Daniel A. Hussar, Ph.D, Remington Professor of Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Pharmacy Times editorial contributor. “Its effective relief and longevity in the market are testaments to the brand’s consumer appeal, and many consider it a necessary staple in their medicine cabinets.”
Dr. Hussar offers these simple tips for the winter season:
- Ask The Pharmacist: Your pharmacist is a readily available source of expertise and advice regarding symptoms you are experiencing. He/she may recommend a nonprescription product that will be of value in relieving your symptoms or that you see your physician.
- Timing is Everything: Be attentive to when symptoms start and their sequence of onset. For example, sore throat is often the first symptom in the development of the common cold.
- Know “A, S and D”: When your symptoms or situation is characterized by “extremes,” you should contact your physician or go to an emergency department. Examples of “extremes” include the age of the individual (e.g., babies, the elderly), the severity of symptoms (e.g., high fever, severe headache, acute abdominal pain), and the duration of symptoms (e.g., symptoms that continue for seven days).
- Know your Symptoms: Identify the specific symptoms you are experiencing (e.g., sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, headache, fever, runny nose, sneezing, itchy and/or watery eyes).
- Choose the best over-the-counter solutions: Safe medicated over-the-counter products that contain phenol or benzocaine offer fast and effective relief for sore throat pain. The best choices include Chloraseptic® Brand lozenges and sprays as they provide fast and effective relief and are the number one pharmacist recommended brand for sore throat relief.
- Let Lozenges Dissolve: Sore throat lozenges should be allowed to slowly dissolve in the mouth, and should not be chewed.
- Read Labels: When choosing over-the-counter medications be sure you choose products that do not contain more active ingredients than are necessary to appropriately relieve symptoms. Doing so may increase the possibility of side effects.
- Take As Directed: Products containing medications should not be used any more frequently than recommended on the package.
- Wash Your Hands: Hand washing is always important but should be done even more frequently when one has a cold, or when family members and/or coworkers have colds.
- Use Nasal Congestion Relief Products: Nasal congestion may result in increased breathing through the mouth and cause dryness and worsened irritation of the throat. Effective nasal decongestants are available without a prescription.
Survey Highlights:
The makers of Chloraseptic® sore throat relief products, in conjunction with TABS Group, an independent consumer analytics company, announces the findings of the 2011 Chloraseptic® Survey on Sore Throats. The study of nearly 1,000 people was commissioned to explore today’s wide-ranging causes of sore throat pain and the remedies people use to treat them. The study findings come at a critical time of year when people are at the highest risk for the flu and colds, which are often accompanied by sore throats.
According to the survey, the most common medical causes for sore throat were cold or flu (65%), sinus infections (33%), coughing (33%) and strep throat (15%). Surprisingly, right behind the obvious medical problems that cause sore throat pain, non-medical and activity-based causes were high for sore throat pain. 72% of respondents listed cold and the flu as having caused sore throats, with activity-based sore throats not far behind.
The survey suggests that football fans, Oprah fans and screaming parents should be armed with sore throat remedies as well. Twenty-eight percent of respondents suffered from sore throat pain due to cheering and screaming. Perhaps that’s why Steve Johnson of the Chicago Tribune pointed out in an article that Oprah should have also given her audience a sample of “Chloraseptic spray, to soothe throats raw from screaming” on her famous “Favorite Things” episodes.
The survey also found that 54% percent of respondents have sore throat pain caused by dry air. The winter season is a busy time for flights, ski trips and other outdoor and high-altitude activities. Those activities, combined with heated environments, heighten people’s exposure to dryness resulting in sore throats.
